Memory Through Movement is an innovative movement program designed for older adults.  It offers active brain training through body awareness and movement techniques, and is intended specifically to maintain and increase memory.  Safe, accessible, challenging and enjoyable activities are conducted with close supervision and a creative spirit.

Many of yesterday’s myths about older adults and the brain have been dismissed by modern scientific investigation.  According to renowned psychiatrist and gerontologist Dr. Gene Cohen,  “brain cells continue to form throughout life…the older brain is resilient and adaptable and there is a maturing of the emotional circuitry.”  Contemporary research indicates that “muscle memory” and “brain memory” are dynamically linked. As Harvard associate professor of psychiatry Dr. John Rate states, “the point of exercise is to build and condition the brain.”

Memory Through Movement uses various exercise techniques, creative movement, body awareness and dance to strengthen neurological connections.  It is a socially engaging and safe program that offers opportunities for creative expression while achieving its therapeutic goals.

Memory Through Movement offers opportunities for older adults to enter and celebrate the”third stage” of life with health and well being.
